Performance Added to TYA’s Gentleman’s Guide Schedule

January 14, 2019 by dramalearningcenter Leave a Comment

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read All About It!

In case you hadn’t heard, the winter drear descended upon Chizzlemere (you will get the joke when you come to see the show) yesterday and canceled our first matinee performance of the area premiere of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. In light of that snow-related cancellation, we have added a 2 pm matinee to the schedule on January 19th. Tickets are available now for this additional matinee as well as for all of our remaining performances. Grab your tickets to this uproarious musical comedy now!

Don’t miss out on this hilarious romp through London circa 1909. Only five performances remain!

TYA Presents Area Premiere this Month

January 2, 2019 by dramalearningcenter Leave a Comment

Area Premiere of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder hits DLC’s stage this month

Drama Learning Center’s professional training company for emerging young artists will present A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder later this month. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is an uproarious comedic romp filled with witty, scene-stealing musical laughs. The musical hit was the most-nominated show of the 2014 season with ten TONY Award nominations (including four wins), seven Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, and a Drama League Award.

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he’s eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D’Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight. He sets off down a far more ghoulish path to speed up the line of succession. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives using a great deal of charm and a dash of murder to become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And don’t forget about love… because murder isn’t the only thing on Monty’s mind. Based on a novel by Roy Horniman, the book and score written by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak are filled with indelible tunes and perpetual laughs in a what’s-old-is-new-again approach to storytelling that will have audiences wondering whether the show was first produced in 2014 or during Broadway’s Golden Age.

Drama Learning Center’s Professional Training Company, TYA (Teaching Young Artists), presents its Winter production and the area premiere of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder from January 12-20, 2019 at Drama Learning Center in Columbia.  A select program available by audition only, the TYA program allows students to work in a professional theatre environment as they learn about all aspects of theatrical work. TYA has a strong history of bringing cutting-edge titles to local audiences. The group has previously mounted area premieres of Cry-Baby, Hands on a Hardbody, First Date, Carrie the Musical, GHOST the Musical, 13, Legally Blonde, and High School Musical. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder kicks off TYA’s 2019 season, which will also include another musical production in June and a summer intensive Theatre for Young Audiences production in July. This production continues TYA’s long-standing tradition of producing professional contemporary musical theatre.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is presented by permission through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

What do students need to do to qualify for the Counselor’s Corner?

  • Special certificate presented at the conclusion of your Spring production
  • Name recognition in all production programs for one year
  • Name listed on our website

Pretty cool, huh? So if you completed a Fall Production or Beginning Acting Class, you’re already well on your way to being inducted into the Counselor’s Corner. Program Highlight: Freaky Friday

October 2, 2018 by dramalearningcenter Leave a Comment

Program Highlight: Freaky Friday

As we announced yesterday, registration is open for our Winter classes. We’re excited to bring Disney’s Freaky Friday to stage this Winter for our Production classes (with classes for grades 3-6, 3-8, and 6-12). While the story isn’t anything new, Disney recently adapted the story for stage and quickly followed it up with a made-for-television movie musical. For those that need a refresher on the story, here you go:

“When an uber-organized mother and her spontaneous teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right. Masquerading as each other, they must work together to solve the mystery of how to break the spell. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another in a way they never could have imagined.”

We’re so excited to bring this new musical to DLC’s students this Winter. Check out one of the introductory songs “Just One Day” featured in both the musical and movie to get a taste of just how fun it’s going to be to tell this story on stage this Winter.

Register before October 15th to save $15 off tuition and secure your spot in the class of your choice. Many of our Fall classes filled in record timing this year– don’t miss out on the chance to be among the first around to bring Freaky Friday to stage in Howard County.

“You can’t tell from this distance but many of the kids, even though they’d never met before, were crying as they took their final bows. In 4 short weeks, you created a family.”– Andrea D.
“I can’t say enough how blown away I was by the incredible talent. It’s been a great experience for my daughter. Thank you! She will miss the cast for sure!”– Margaret O.
“Even though my daughter was one of the youngest she said she always felt included by the older kids who looked out for them. This was a hugely ambitious project and it ended up being amazing! Thank you for taking this on and making such a caring environment for all the kids! This is why I love theatre, and now my daughter does too!”– Alexia C.
“This was an awesome experience!! The older kids were great with my daughter who was one of the youngest in the cast. I truly appreciate the supportive and enriching environment that DLC created for this show.”– Beth H.
“Not only was the show impressive, the experience was wonderful. My daughter and friends sobbed after the last performance. They’ve never been as close as a cast and they are already committed to return next summer.”– Andrea D.
