Winter Workshop Topics in the News

We love getting to explore topical subjects for our School’s Out Drama Workshops. These are a great opportunity for students to learn what it’s like to be at Drama Learning Center for a day– learning songs and dances, having fun with arts and crafts, and learning from our fun and engaging staff of teaching artists. This Winter’s lineup of workshop topics is definitely ripped from the headlines!

  1. Star Wars Hero Training Camp: This Winter Break, we’re exploring a different dynamic duo from the Star Wars franchise just in time for the release of The Last Jedi. Check out this definitive ranking of all 9 ‘Star Wars’ movies from USA Today. Join us from December 26-29 (either for a day or all 4) as we train heroes just like Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and more. Check out the whole lineup here.
  2. Olaf’s Frozen Adventure: Disney/Pixar tacked on a 20-minute Olaf ‘short’ to the beginning of new animated feature Coco, and it was a controversial move. Find out what some people thought about it in ‘Coco’ Director Says ‘No Lessons Learned’ from ‘Frozen’ Short recently published on HuffPost. Did you see the short? We always have a little bit of “Frozen Fever” here at DLC, and we’re going to be celebrating all things Olaf on Monday, January 15 for our first School’s Out Workshop of 2018. Register today here.
  3. Tangled: We’ve been loving that Rapunzel has gotten more story time with the launch of Tangled: The Series. Have you been watching the new television series? Check out this recent review of “Queen for a Day,” which takes place after the events of Tangled but before the Tangled Ever After short. Our Tangled-themed School’s Out Workshop will be held Friday, February 16. We hope to see you there! Register for it here.
  4. Nicktoons: Here at DLC HQ, we practically grew up on ’90s Nicktoons, so we’re glad that they’re experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Check out this recently-published list of 43 Behind the Scenes Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Your Favorite ’90s Nicktoons on Buzzfeed. We’re celebrating Nicktoons on Wednesday, February 19. Register for that School’s Out Drama Workshop today.

Last Call for Lion King T-Shirts!

Our Fall T-shirt fundraiser is currently underway! Sport your DLC pride and commemorate your studen’s production of The Lion King with a t-shirt (or two… or three). The sale ends on Friday, so order yours today!

These super-soft t-shirts come in both youth and adult sizes, so there’s the perfect shirt for everyone in your family. We’ve partnered again with Custom Ink Fundraising, who will donate a portion of the proceeds back to Drama Learning Center. These shirts help offset production costs and keep your tuition affordable. What does that mean? When you participate in fundraisers like this one, we’re able to raise money for costumes, set pieces, props, and professional theatre technicians. That way, more of the money that you pay for tuition goes directly to paying your teaching artists. We’re committed to keeping tuition affordable, and that’s why we periodically hold fundraisers just like this one. Thank you in advance for supporting your child’s journey in the arts!

This fundraiser closes on Friday, October 20th. We aren’t able to honor any late orders, so make sure that you order yours on time so that you don’t miss out.

Teaching Artist Spotlight: Janine Sunday

We’re chugging along with our weekly series getting to know a little more about our Private Instruction faculty at DLC. This week, we learn a little more about Ms. Janine Sunday!

Q: Where are you from? How long have you been in the area?
A: I was born in Vietnam, adopted as an infant, and raised in New Jersey. Maryland has been my home for almost 20 years.

Q: Which areas of study do you teach? How long have you been teaching?
A: I have been teaching acting and voice for about 10 years.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about teaching private lessons?
A: When a student has a breakthrough, it’s exciting. I also love when a student comes back to me after an audition or a performance and tells me that things we have been working on paid off.

Q: What’s the craziest thing that has ever happened to you in a private lesson?
A: I had a student that had been studying with me for a few months and was talking about how much she loved Sweeney Todd at Red Branch Theatre Company [the professional theatre in residence at DLC]. When I told her that I was Mrs. Lovett, she freaked out a little, and had to take a moment to recover. It was adorable and flattering.

Q: What do you do outside of teaching?
A: I’m a mom, and I still perform in the area. That keeps me pretty busy.

Q: What’s one fun fact that we should know about you?
A: Well… there are so many “fun facts” (are they REALLY fun?)… I always mention my obsession with vacuums (I love them). I stink at gardening, but I want to be good. I’m pretty crafty, and I dislike yellow mustard. I also always offer to sing “Meadowlark” even though I don’t actually know the words.

Ms. Janine hold studio hours on Monday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Learn musical theatre song interpretation from one of the area’s perennial favorite stage performers! Give us a call at (410) 849-6335 today to inquire about availability with her or any of our other highly-qualified private instructors in voice, acting, piano, audition, prep, on-screen acting, and more! Ms. Janine also teaches our adult musical theatre class during the year. Fill out the form below so that we can notify you when a new session opens up!
