Summer Camp Spotlight #3

It’s time to highlight more of our engaging and enriching Summer Camp sessions that are coming this year. Drama Learning Center is one of the only summer camp providers in Howard County that is open for the entire summer. Join us for a week or two, or stay for an entire summer of fun with diverse offerings and unique opportunities guaranteed to meet everyone’s interests. Today, we’re talking about…

Middle & High School Performance-Based Camps

For middle and high schoolers that want to hone their performance skills, we’ve got some great weeks of camp lined up for you. These camps will position students in grades 6-12 to improve their audition skills, self-confidence, and dive deep into character development by performing in full productions. Productions of Les Misérables and Legally Blonde, Jr. will both be performed on stage in the Howard High School auditorium.

Musical Theatre Masterclass (June 25-29)

Work with industry professionals to take your singing, dancing, and acting to the next level. Ace that next audition and learn to pick material with confidence! Students will hone techniques and complete the week with a new audition package, an updated theatrical resume, and a professional headshot. Have ideas for pieces you’d like to perform? Bring them along or let us make suggestions.

Les Misérables: School Edition (July 2-27)

Dream a dream with DLC! One of the most beloved musicals of all time comes to life on the stage this summer. Students will explore the complex story of Les Miserables while working on their character development, vocal technique, and ensemble theatre skills. In addition to rehearsing for the performance, students will also participate in master classes with industry professionals on audition preparation, improvisation, and more. Camp culminates in four final performances.

Legally Blonde, Jr. (July 30 – August 17)

Perform in a musical while working as a theatrical team. Join Harvard’s beloved blonde on a journey of self-empowerment in this energetic, pop-infused musical. Tuition also includes a walking field trip to Shadowland Laser Tag. Camp culminates in four final performances.

Summer Camp – What to Expect

Summer is a time for fun, and we definitely like to strike a great balanace between work and play in our Summer Drama Camps. We find that a lot of first-time campers are curious about what they can expect during their days in a drama camp at DLC. While some of our specialty camps (like Cosplay, Theatre Tech, and Director-in-Training) have a different format, the below sample schedule is a good indicator of what you can expect most days to look like for our performance-based camps. The first two days are generally comprised with “Getting to Know You” activities, drama games, orientation to the facility, and auditions/casting placement.

After that, a typical camp day looks something like this:

  • 9am – 9:15am: Drop off, get settled
  • 9:15am – 9:30pm: Warm ups
  • 9:30am – 10:30am: Rehearsal 1 (Music, Staging, or Choreography)
  • 10:30am – 10:45am: Snack/Rest room Break
  • 10:45am – Noon: Rehearsal 2 (Music, Staging, or Choreography)
  • Noon – 12:45pm: Lunch & Recess
  • 12:45pm – 1:15pm: Drama Games, Arts & Crafts
  • 1:15pm – 2:45pm: Rehearsal 3 (Music, Staging, or Choreography)
  • 2:45pm – 3pm: Final Wrap Up & Dismissal

Our three-week production camps (Alice in Wonderland and Legally Blonde) also can expect to have fun celebrating the week of the show with spirit week (pajama day, wacky tacky day, etc.), enjoy a walking field trip to Shadowland Laser Tag, and spend the final two days of camp sharing what they learned with family and friends through four final performances.

We hope that this answers some of the questions that you might have about what summer fun means at Drama Learning Center. Make sure you register for our Summer Drama Camps by February 15th to save up to $100 off each session of camp!
