Mary Poppins Returns

Did you know that Mary Poppins is headed back to the silver screen after many long years? This new adaptation is directed by Rob Marshall, and stars Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, The Devil Wears Prada), Lin-Manuel Miranda (author and star of hit Broadway show Hamilton), and Colin Firth (Bridget Jones’s Diary,  Mamma Mia!). This sequel set in Depression-era London is set to be released Christmas of 2018. In honor of this Mary Poppins re-boot, we’re sharing some trivia about the upcoming film today!

  • Julie Andrews, who originated the film role in 1964, was very supportive of Emily Blunt’s casting as her successor. She called it a “wonderful” casting decision. When Emily Blunt heard the news, she created tears of joy.
  • Director Rob Marshall previously collaborated with Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep on the musical film adaptation of Into the Woods in 2014.
  • When the first Mary Poppins movie was being written, Walt Disney offered the role to Julie Andrews, who declined because she was pregnant. Walt felt so strongly about casting Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins that he posponed the production to accommodate her schedule. The same thing happened again with “Mary Poppins Returns!” Production had to be postponed to accommodate for Emily Blunt’s pregnancy.

As you can see, this is a great time to tell the story of everyone’s favorite flying nanny. We’re so excited to bring this well-loved tale to our stage at DLC this Winter. Registration is open and classes will be here before you know it. Head to our Winter page and register for class today!

DLC Annie-versary Tshirt Campaign

Chances are that if you’ve been a part of the DLC community at any point in the past ten years that you have participated in a production of the classic musical about everyone’s favorite orphan, Annie. This is the musical that started it all for Ms. Stephanie Williams – third and current owner of Drama Learning Center. Annie has been a perennial favorite at Drama Learning Center from onsite classes to Summer drama classes to after school classes in local Howard County Public Schools partners.

Do you see Ms. Stephanie? How about Drama Learning Center Alum and current teaching artist Amy Williamson as Ms. Hannigan in Ms. Stephanie’s first Tuesday Class as owner of DLC

We’re commemorating Ms. Stephanie’s 10-year anniversary owning Drama Learning Center with Fall production classes of Annie and a collectors’ edition long-sleeved t-shirt with our current Annie artwork reflecting our updated take on the American classic. Paying homage to the newest film adaptation of Annie starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx.

Now, regardless of whether you’re in a Fall production class at DLC, we have a living souvenir you can get now to remember your memories of Annie at DLC.

We’ve partnered with Booster to print these limited edition Annie-versary shirts. Celebrate your time at DLC whether it was 10 years ago or today. Booster will donate a portion of the proceeds back to DLC to offset production costs and fund much-needed facility improvements while keeping tuition affordable. Grab yours today– this campaign only lasts for 13 more days. Once the campaign closes, we can’t print anymore shirts. We can’t wait to see current DLC production classes sport their shirts for #ShowShirtSaturday.

4 Key Reasons to Register Early for Winter Classes

The early bird gets the worm.

You snooze, you lose.

At DLC, we believe in rewarding the early birds. Commit to class early and get the deepest discounts we are able to give. If you’re still wondering why you should register for Mary Poppins, Disney’s AristoCATS, or Broadway Babies: Paw Patrol early, you need look no further. We’ve compiled a quick list of the top 5 reasons to register early.

  1. Get your choice of time and class – many popular classes (like Elementary Musical Theatre on Friday evenings) fill up during the early bird registration period. Classes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Register early to secure your spot in your favorite class.
  2. Plan your schedule in advance – when you register for class, you have all dates for regular weekly classes, dress rehearsals, and performances at your fingertips. Plug them in to your calendar and schedule the rest of your activities with confidence that they won’t be interrupted by an unanticipated trip to Drama Learning Center.
  3. Cross another thing off your list before the madness of holiday season starts. In December, you’re going to want to be focusing on your Winter Break vacation plans and holiday shopping– not registering for activities. Get it done now, and then you don’t have to think about it in December.
  4. SAVE MONEY! Who doesn’t like an extra $15 in their bank account? That’s an extra Starbucks or two for you this month!

So, what are you waiting for? If you have any questions about which class is the best for your student, please let us know by filling out the form below.
