Meet the Teaching Artist – Janine Sunday

Many of our favorite Fall classes are underway or about to start. We don’t believe that drama instruction is just for the kids, and we’re excited to offer our second Adult Musical Theatre class this Fall. Under the tutelage of veteran performer, teacher, and theatre artist Janine Sunday, students are guaranteed to get a lot out of this class. Get to know Janine a little better now!

Janine Sunday has been performing on stages in the DC/Baltimore area for almost 20 years. She is a four time Helen Hayes Nominee and a familiar facve at both Toby’s Dinner Theatre and at the Olney Theatre Center. She was an integral part in CCTA’s Teen Professional Theatre Camp for many years serving as the company managing director, teaching various master classes in lyric interpretation, 16 bar and audition preparation, developing a character in an ensemble, monologue coaching and more. Ms. Sunday was classically trained at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was most recently seen on stage as Mrs. Lovett in Red Branch Theatre Company’s production of Sweeney Todd. Ms. Sunday also teaches private voice lessons at DLC and serves as our production manager.

Janine’s varied expertise in all areas of theatre provides a unique, holistic, and ensemble-based focus on this Adult Musical Theatre class that was a hit last session. Learn from Janine as well as your fellow students while working together in a group to learn new songs, choreography, and scenes in a low-pressure environment suitable for beginner and intermediate students. Adult Musical Theatre meets Saturdays from 3:30 – 5 pm starting October 1st. The class will culminate in a final showcase for family and friends at the end of the last class. TYA Fall Title and Auditions Announced (Part 2)

While the TYA Senior Company production title has been out for awhile, Drama Learning Center announced TYA Junior Company’s Fall/Winter production title on social media last week. Following successful productions of SHREK the Musical and The Addams Family, Junior Company will fly high with England’s favorite “practically perfect” nanny, Mary Poppins. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins received nominations for nine Olivier Awards and seven TONY Awards during an exciting Broadway run of 2,500 performances.

After being the first nanny that hasn’t been sent packing, Mary Poppins takes Young Jane and Michael Banks on magical and memorable adventures. She teaches the children and grown-ups alike that “Anything can happen if you let it.”
Junior Company will have the opportunity to tell this timeless story through memorable songs, enchanting dance numbers, and special effects and illusions. Auditions begin next week by appointment, and some slots remain.

Junior Company students should note that students who are accepted into Fall/Winter session of Junior Company will be unable to do a Drama Learning Center Winter production class. Directors recommend that Junior Company students participate in DLC Fall and Spring production classes in conjunction with TYA Junior Company’s Winter production and Spring skills-based class to maximize their performance opportunities and skill-building potential.

Secure your spot on the audition schedule now. Spaces are limited, and you’re not going to want to miss out on the incredible productions being produced by both companies of TYA Professional Training Program. Full casting call information can be found on our TYA page. Check out our new TYA FAQs if you’re new to the program to get a taste of what to expect. And if you’ve already decided to give TYA a try but want to polish your audition material, consider setting up a couple of audition prep lessons with one of our highly qualified teachers to help you rock your next audition!

TYA Fall Title and Auditions Announced (Part 1)

TYA directors announced Senior Company’s Fall/Winter production at last month’s TYA Cabaret and Senior Showcase. Drama Learning Center’s Professional Training Program has a long-standing history of producing area premieres, and this season’s Hands on a Hardbody is no exception. Past area premieres include shows like High School Musical13, Legally Blonde, Ghost, Carrie, and last season’s First Date. In addition to being the first performing company in the area to produce this title that was nominated for 2013 TONY Awards for Best Original Score, and Best Featured Actor & Actress in a Musical, company members will have the opportunity to explore contemporary musical styles often not found in musical theatre (such as Country Western and Gospel among others).

The exciting announcements don’t end with the revelation of Hands on a Hardbody, though. Junior Company candidates will learn the production they are slated to produce on September 1st. TYA Junior Company has previously mounted successful productions of SHREK the Musical and The Addams Family. This season’s Winter 2017 title is sure to please as well.
